Wish I could give this place more than 5 stars. My wife and I have been multiple times - we did the pre fixe once and then just a la carte for other times. Both paths are great experiences. The food is phenomenal as are the cocktails.

Perhaps most impressive is the service. While you have one primary waiter, it's really service "by committee" with all members of the team coming by to take empty dishes away, deliver delicious food, and otherwise check on you. They operate as if they are one, amazing and omnipresent server

AL's place is probably my favorite restaurant in SF. Please visit them. You won't be disappointed

Overall was solid, although I do question a bit Michelin star status for some of the one stars I've had of late! I feel like there's two camps for 1 star contenders - the solid staples, and places with creative flair. I'd definitely put this in the later category - if you arrive expecting to eat "normal" things, then you might be disappointed. But if you're looking for something a little unconventional, then this is fun.

I honestly didn't enjoy every dish, which was a bit of what I expected going in. Highlights were probably the chawanmushi, amberjack, salad, and green curry. The amberjack and salad were in the more conventional camp, but well done nonetheless (although I really didn't love that for the salad we were told to use our hands - we were dining outdoors so had to venture in to wash our hands again...otherwise it strikes me as pretty unsanitary.)

The chawanmushi was strangely delicious - it was made with fava beans so quite different from the traditional egg- based prep, but nailed the umami and custard texture. The strawberries in the green curry were a great touch of lightness and acidity, and the curry itself was resoundingly good. The French fries and dessert were a bit lackluster and I could have done without.

If you are truly looking for a great Michelin experience without the pretentiousness that sometimes accompanies it, then Al's Place is the spot you must dine at.

Every time we've gone the tasting menu was our choice and we've never regretted it. Every dish was on point and there's always something new that we end up falling in love with. This time it was the grits and they were awesome.

By the way, the wine pairings are spot on. Sometimes I believe that the wine pairings are a way to sucker you into the bottles that haven't been selling, but at Al's Place they are spot on. And we even got a pairing with our desert! How many other restaurants go that far?

Great service, awesome food, and a fun atmosphere. We will keep going back.

This is a neat restaurant located in the outskirts of the Mission - right on the edge of the commercial and residential space. I like the vibe, and adore the outdoor parklettes that provide privacy and social distancing.

Did I mention the heat lamps - this place is generous with the heat, way needed in SF during the Summer.

The steak is very good here - medium rare, flavorful, tender, smokey, perfect.
but the pickle fries were really just .... bad. I don't understand the appeal or the texture or the smell or ....  (excuse me while I gag). They tasted spoiled.

5 stars for the steak and ambiance and service. 0 stars for the french fries.
